Since the publication of Silent Spring almost six decades ago awareness of risks associated with the use and relatively uncontrolled release of chemicals has advanced greatly. In this presentation I aim to look at advances in our understanding of use and fate of relatively persistent chemical hazards, the issues associated with regulation of such chemicals and then discuss how use of chemicals may affect our capability to move towards a circular economy and achieve UNEPs sustainable development goals.
